Universe B or not to B? Does it exist?

The invisible Dark Matter and Energy that makes up over 90% of our universe according to scientists has long been explored by magicians and mystics, even if they have not understood it. While Eastern magical and mystical systems have known about Dark Matter and Energy, it is only recently that Western magicians have begun to catch up.

The Western Magical tradition is based around the Tree of Life, a medieval propaganda invention to convert Jews to Christianity that continues to persist. Unfortunately the Tree of Life is badly equipped to allow any understanding or comprehension beyond the very narrow limits it describes.

The two leading lights for discussion of Universe B are Michael Bertiaux and Kenneth Grant. Unfortunately, their writing styles are very difficult to understand, and it is very easy to be intimidated at best, or at worse terrified.

My recent article on the Great Old Ones being accessed using Power crystals demonstrates that there are other, much simpler methods of accessing Dark Matter and Energy.

Stuck in the Tree

The primary western technique for accessing Universe B (ours is Universe A) is via various points on the Tree of Life, particularly Daath. The limitations of the Tree can be circumvented. Frater Achad proposed entirely inverting the structure. Kenneth Grant sees the Tree as three dimensiona; the Paths become tunnels, so that there is a back to the Tree. He uses the Tunnels of Set, as he calls them to access other spiritual systems, such as Liber 231. As a result of writing The Tarot and the Magus, I was lead to the inevitable conclusion as to the invalidity of the Tree, and that there were other methods, systems and structures that expand the magical prowess of the magician, rather than limit it. Allied with my own powerful mystical experiences with my own teacher, Punditt Maharaj, I have been exploring these new (to the West) pathways. While I was working with Tim Rifat, who knew nothing of spiritual systems, Tim made great progress, but we parted the ways at a point before I was able to fully understand accessing Dark Matter and Energy. As a result, rvscience is stuck in a time-warp. This was brought home to me the other day when I came across him in hiding in what he thought was Universe B. He demonstrated that he could traverse from Universe B to Universe A, but actually there was no difference! So, if you want to find him, look in his version of Universe B. In the meantime, we shall explore the real Universe B, and how it connects to Universe A.

Egyptian Roots

Careful reading of Kenneth Grant’s books reveals the structure of Universe B. I found that there is a strong Egyptian flavour to Universe B that is entirely at odds to the Golden Dawn vision of the Egyptian Gods, since they are anachronistically connected to the Tree of Life. Reverting back to authentic models, the landscape of Universe B is populated with Egyptian architecture, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that Kenneth Grant agrees, using the Sekhet-Aarhu, which he associates with the Elysian fields. Sekhet relates to the Lioness, and sounds similar to Shakti. The topology of Amenta is also revealed. The Egyptian flavour of the Liber 231 is strong, but we are getting ahead of ourselves. A fascinating aspect of the visions of Universe B is the low lighting levels — there is no light source like the Sun, but there is illumination, something similar to dusk.

Kenneth Grant mentions three levels within Universe B:

  • Air, Nuit
  • Hills of Hathor
  • Amenta, Tunnels of Set

Nuit describes the perpetual night of Universe B, illuminated by starry light, and occasionally by the moon. The Hills of Hathor include Egyptian temples. Below the Earth are the Tunnels of Set. These Tunnels are not accessed via the Tree, but by other methods, which I will describe. The tunnels are rarely straight; they twist and turn in all directions, often becoming incredibly narrow — you may have seen them in dreams, perhaps with a guide.

In a nutshell, the above adequately describes the landscape of Universe B. How Universe B is populated will depend on your own background and understanding. As you can see there is little to be frightened of! So why is there such fear and terror associated with Universe B? The answer lies in the method of accessing Universe B. If you use the methods described here you will have few worries. The same cannot be said for methods based upon Kabbalism and rvscience.

The Scary Stuff — where is evil?

Kenneth Grant describes Universe B in terms of the Qlippoth, "abnormal, perverted lusts", extra-cosmic and extra-terrestrial for "demons, giants, elementals, dwarfs, monstrous, bestial". Hardly inspiring is it? Why would you want to go there? The reason for the terrifying imagery is Grant’s use of the Tree of Life as the access point, and the Tree naturally distorts visions and perceptions of Universe B as "evil". For many years, my own experience of "evil" is of spiritual entities in the wrong place, just as a weed is a plant growing in the wrong place. Where focussing on "evil" takes place, the magician is disempowered, embittered, and becomes increasingly paranoid. My view is that there is no evil in Universe A or B, a view endorsed by, suprisingly, Michael Bertiaux, quoted in Grant’s books:

Evil does not exist in Universe A, and in Universe B it does not exist. However, when there is a relationship between the two universes, there is the possibility of evil coming into the world, into Universe A. That is why the magicians who work along the lines of seeking contact with Universe B are sometimes in a situation where they convey the impression of being 'black magicians' or else of being 'dangerously evil' or 'perverse and unnatural'.

And where is the "normal" method of interfacing between the two Universes? Step forward the Tree of Life! Far from being a benign structure where danger exists off the Tree, the entire structure is in fact very dangerous for the unwary. It is a shame that the New Age movement has so enthusiastically embraced the Tree in pathworking.

With some thought, a simple method of dealing with Black Magicians presents itself — move them from that intermediate state between the Universes into one or other, using the Space-Time continuum. Of course, one must have mastery of both Universes to do this.

Gates to the Other Side — the Guardians

The greatest of the Guardians is your Holy Guardian Angel, but of course he is placed on Tiphareth, which completely emasculates the power of your HGA. In my book The Tarot and the Magus, the singular becomes plural, so that you have many Holy Guardian Angels associated with Liber 231 and the Atbash code, with no relationship to Tipareth. To have any success, you need to destroy the notion of any connection between your HGA and the Tree.

Gematria is a fruitful method for accessing Universe B. Grant cites 131, Baphomet, and Mako, son of Typhon. 71, the number of LAM, who is particularly powerful, but he needs to be separated from the Tree of Life to be properly understood. The sequence of numbers 111, 222, 333, etc is particularly powerful. 555 is considered by Grant to be the "Tunnel of Kteis leading to Universe B", ie the vagina, a method we shall come back to. Choronzon is another Guardian who is nowhere as fearful as many writers try to suggest. Bertiaux describes Choronzon as guarding 16 Doors and 11 Gates. The sum of 27 immediately suggests the Lunar Mansions as another method of accessing Universe B. Yuggoth, a Lovecraftian invention, represented by Nu-Isis according to Grant is another source. As well as the wonderful spirits of Liber 231, we have their cousins, the Sky Gods of the Goetia, whose number 72 is related to OB, the Serpent. Forget the Abramelin rituals!

The confusion around the occult significance of Universe B is probably nowhere better exhibited than on rvscience, where while writing about the benefits of Universe B, there are all the "anti" crystals against the Goetia and Tarot and other spirits. The proprietor wishes to destroy the inhabitants of the Universe B, except that he provides no method of getting there in the first place! Go figure.

The Tarot

Tarot represents the best and most powerful system for accessing and unifying the Universes, but to do this, the system has to be seen stripped of associations with the Tree of Life. Several years ago I found I had accumulated a pile of notes on the Tree which was over a foot high. Looking through the notes, I was shocked to realise that after nearly twenty years of study, I had made no progress — the Tree is an evolutionary dead-end. I have been looking for alternative methods of looking at the structure of the Tarot, using the Opening of the Key spread as the primary research tool. While researching The Tarot and the Magus I discovered the unaspected cards in the counting strings. These cards provide access from other universes, in particular Universe B. However, there are some cards that have special powers and connections to Universe B — these are the Mother Letters, the Fool, Hanged Man and Aeon, and The Star, Adjustment and the Moon. The Princess of Disks is particularly powerful. It was by card counting that the spirits of Liber 231 came to me freely, as they have done to others who use this system of Tarot, and when they do, their cousins the Goetia are also anxious to make contact.

Accessing Universe B — Sex Magick

Apart from the Tarot and Opening of the Key, sex magick is a powerful method of accessing Universe B. As mentioned previously, Woman is the gateway to Universe B via the vagina. In one sense, sexual union is also the union of Universe A with Universe B. Tucked away in Kenneth Grant’s writings is the key to sex magick that you can use here.

Prepare the sigil, or use the appropriate crystal. You then project awareness, penetrating and permeating sigil in the crystal. One way is to assume the form of the spirit or guardian, or the sigil. 'Vibrate' the name of the spirit into the woman, or astral form of the woman, until the woman assumes the form of the spirit. A Door of Power will then form in Sekhet-Aarhu which you can enter.

Kenneth Grant lists a number of western authors who have written on Universe B:

I have not studied the writings of a number of these authors, so if you have any insights, I would be grateful for any pointers. I would add William Blake to the list. Castaneda’s Nagual is completely misunderstood on rvscience.


The ultimate is not to have the dichotomy of either Universe A or Universe B. In reality there is no sharp dividing line. We can easily live in both worlds, enjoying the benefits of both. The Dark Matter and Dark Energy were part of the early stages of the Big Bang, so to incorporate them is to know our Roots. Fear is engendered by separation and ignorance. The reality is that Universe A and Universe B have never been separate — it is only by our cultural and spiritual ignorance that we are in this mess. To live in Universe A and B together is to walk with giants in the landscape, to have spiritual powers easily at our disposal, to work with spiritual powers to benefit of us both. This spiritual ecology is available right now, through the use of crystals.
